TATTOO REMOVAL

Many people nowadays are wanting to remove their old tattoos for numerous reasons. PhiLaser is a good choice for this procedure. Depending on the age, colour and location of the tattoo, some will be easier and quicker to remove than others.

To what extent a tattoo will be successfully removed depends on how much the tattooed part is supplied with blood and lymphoma. Ones in the head and neck area are the fastest to remove followed by the upper and lower parts of the torso. The slowest tattoos to remove are the ones located closer to the hands and feet.

The ink used in the tattoo can also affect how well the tattoo will be removed. The colours used in tattoo studios are often mixed with different compounds, making it difficult to determine the number of necessary treatments based solely on the tattoo colour. In general the most commonly used colours are black, red, blue, green and yellow. Black ink is the easiest to remove as the pigment particles in the dermis are of the smallest diameter and absorb every ray of light. Red is the next colour easiest to remove with blue being the hardest.

The amount of ink used in a tattoo can also affect how well it will remove. For example, amateur tattoos are usually placed unevenly in the superficial dermis and tend to contain less ink than professionally done tattoos, making them easier to remove. Professional tattoos tend to lay deeper in the dermis and have a greater density of pigment.

Because of all the factors above, there is no universal answer on how many removal treatments are required. It is necessary to wait a month after the first removal treatment to see results and give a better idea on how many treatments will be required.

Sun exposure is forbidden 3-4 weeks prior to the treatment as the laser can discolour tanned or burnt skin. Also until the skin heals it should be protected from the sun after/between treatments. Failing to do this can cause discolouration or scars.

To shorten the skin recovery time the client should use the ‘Phi Skin Candy’ after treatment gel. This will be supplied by the technician on the first session for an extra cost of €30 but will then last for future treatments. This gel has a cooling effect and is carefully formulated to hydrate and soothe the skin after treatments, preventing swelling and redness. This gel will be applied directly after each treatment, then the client should apply a thin layer 2 to 3 times a day for the following week.

If the treated area feels very tender or warm up to 48 hours after the treatment, it is advised to apply cold compresses of ice or a pack of frozen peas wrapped in a clean cloth. Do not apply ice directly to the skin as this can burn. Also do not apply any creams/lotions other than what your laser technician recommends.

Like all these kinds of treatments, there can be potential side effects that may affect some skin types depending on sensitivity/how your skin heals etc. These potential side effects are:
PAIN: numbing cream is used to reduce pain, however pain is individual to each persons sensitivity levels.
REDNESS/SWELLING/ITCHING: this is a very common side effect and can last for a few days after treatment.
SENSITIVITY TO THE SUN: This is a pretty common side effect,  meaning sun exposure should be avoided during the 3/4 weeks healing period.
CHANGES IN SKIN PIGMENTATION: PhiLaser provides a better effect on lighter skin tones than darker ones, but both kinds of skin tones have risk of hypopigmentation (lightening of the skin) or hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin). Asian skin is particularly prone to hyperpigmentation. This is a less common side effect, but can happen.
BRUISING: This is possible and should fade on its own.
INFECTION: this is not a very common side effect that can happen. If the skin scabs, the client must resist the urge to pick them as this can also cause an infection.
SCARRING: Laser treatment is essentially ‘damaging the skin to make it better’ so naturally a risk of scarring the skin is possible. This will largely depend on skin type. Someone prone to keloid scars for example will be more likely to scar.
BLISTERING/SCABBING/CRUSTING: If this occurs, they must be left to heal on their own. Just stick with the after laser gel applications and resist the urge to pick.

The price of laser removal will vary for each client depending on the size of the tattoo. Sending a photo of your tattoo and explaining its size/location can help to give your technician an idea on price per session. Below is a chart to give you a guesstimate on price. my current offer for 2022 is an additional 50% off the prices shown. Keep in mind to add an extra €30 on for the ‘Phi Skin Candy After Laser Gel' for the first session.
